Dragon Fruit in my Homeland It’s Natural Fruit

While dragon fruit may appear unusual, it tastes fantastic in tropical fruit salads, is high in nutrients, and is easy to grow in most parts of Aᴜsᴛʀᴀʟɪᴀ if planted in a location that receives at least six hours of direct sunlight every day. Pitaya, strawberry pear, cactus fruit, Kaktus madu, Night-blooming cereus, and Belle of the night are all names for dragon fruit plants, which are native to South America. Everything you need to know about producing dragon fruit at home may be found here.

After you get beyond the strange appearance of dragon fruit, you’ll notice that it looks a lot like other tropical fruits. In fact, if you can eat a kiwi fruit, you can eat dragon fruit as well. The dragon fruit has a wʜɪᴛe flesh, tiny black seeds, and a bright pink skin.

Fruit salads, smoothies, and salads are frequent uses for this fruit, which weights between 150 and 600 grams per fruit. It has a mild flavor and a texture that is similar to that of kiwi fruit. All you have to do is split the fruit in half and scoop out the flesh to prepare it.

Dragon fruit may be grown from seeds with very little equipment but a lot of time. Scoop the seeds out of one organic dragon fruit from your local grocer.

Before planting the seeds in a seed-starting tray with damp soil, wash and dry them overnight. Within two weeks, the seeds should germinate.

Water seedlings only as necessary, and make sure the soil is totally dry before watering again. Expect a healthy harvest of dragon fruit to take five to seven years to mature and bear fruit if you start from seed. This is why so many dragon fruit gardeners prefer to start with a cutting (which will take just one to three years to fruit).

It’s relatively simple to propagate a dragon fruit tree from a cutting; all you need to do is find a friend who has one. Cut a 30cm part of a dragon fruit tree and dry it for 5-6 days, or until the cut end turns wʜɪᴛe. Simply insert cut side down in sandy cacti soil and water monthly once it has dried.

Within a month, your plant will send out roots and establish itself as a permanent resident, after which it will continue to develop. It’s that simple! With this strategy, you’ll have to wait between one and three years for fruit.

Growing dragon fruit in pots is a good idea, especially if you reside in a cooler part of Aᴜsᴛʀᴀʟɪᴀ, because you can relocate your plant to a warmer location as needed. Dragon fruit plants can grow quite tall and set down aerial roots in the correct conditions.

Look for a pot that is about 250mm deep and 600mm broad when selecting one. Fill it with good quality cactus potting soil that is slightly acidic and sandy. Because dragon fruit plants are climbers, they should be supported with a stake, trellis, or other climbing structure.

Dragon fruit is a terrific way to add color and personality to your garden by growing it outside. To prepare, get rid of any weeds and pebbles in the area, and make sure the soil is slightly sandy and acidic. You can always add a little more potting mix to the bed to make it more cactus-resistant.

As your dragon fruit plant grows, invest in a trellis or place it near a fence so it can climb on it; however, keep in mind that they are heavy plants, so it must be able to handle the weight of the dragon fruit plant when it is bearing fruit.

In general, dragon fruit bushes are pest-free, but once the valued fruit begins to ripen, you’ll need to keep an eye out for hungry bats and birds. To keep your fruit safe, use bird netting.

If you observe spots on the plant’s stems and leaves, you may have an infection. A bacterial infection causes the stem of the dragon fruit to decay. If you find spots, don’t worry; the dragon fruit plant will usually fight them off on its own.

During the summer, if your dragon fruit plant is becoming out of hand, cut it back. Keep an eye out for signs of rot on your dragon fruit plant, which can be caused by harsh weather. Sharp clippers can be used to securely remove rotting plant components.

Overwatering is one of the quickest ways to ᴅᴇsᴛʀᴏʏ dragon fruit plants. Make sure the soil is never completely saturated, and if in doubt, wait a day or two before watering. If you water the plant too frequently, the roots may rot.
