Wild boar, also known as feral pigs, were not native to the United States. Wild boars were first introduced to the continent in the 1500s by Spanish explorers, who brought domestic pigs with them to use as a food source.
Over time, some of these domestic pigs escaped and became feral, adapting to the wild and thriving in various regions throughout the country.
Today, there are an estimated 8,900,000 wild boars in America, causing significant damage to crops and natural habitats, and posing a threat to both wildlife and human populations.

Comment 3: Mark Sherrill said: “During Hurricane Harvey, the wild pigs came into the neighborhood to escape the flooding. You cannot appreciate how big they are. Much bigger than a large dog. I bought outside lights and an automatic garage door opener because a friend of mine stumbled on a group that was between her house and vehicle.”
Comment 4: Joey Caddell said: “Droughts as we had last year in the West greatly reduced numbers by making pigs too malnourished to reproduce, allowing hunters to catch up with populations. Numbers are reduced by over 90% by the time rains return to grow food sources.”
Comment 5: Ken Nielsen said: “I lived in rural Spain last year and always wondered about the gunshots I heard. Wild boar is supposedly common here. I suspect that is what I was hearing. With no handguns legal, and me being a resident, but not a citizen, I didn’t look into gun ownership. But it did stop me from hiking in certain areas. Too bad we can’t commercialize boar meat in the USA. I guess if it was profitable, we wouldn’t have this problem. I love pork, and it’s a shame we can’t utilize what appears to be abundant in nature. Crazy, as it’s obviously hormone and antibiotic-free naturally-fed meat.”

I and a second cousin and have killed 27 in a week just sneaking up on them while they are grazing on clover. We kept 2 young sows to cook, both had piglets and when we skinned them out they had piglets on the inside as well. They are just baby factories.”
