How to Get FREE Blueberry Plants from Store-Bought Blueberries!

It is hailed that blueberries are a superfood because they are not only incredibly nutrient-dense but also rich in flavonoids, which have been demonstrated to lessen the harmful effects of oxidation and inflammation and help the body ғɪɢʜᴛ off ᴅɪsᴇᴀsᴇ.

Most home gardeners buy cuttings, but did you know that sowing blueberry seeds will also produce a plant? The seeds must first be extracted from the fruit’s pulp, which requires some effort. Although you can use fruit from a shrub that is already there or from the ones you buy at the store, the results might be subpar or nonexistent.

The fact that blueberries do not self-pollinate makes them highly unpredictable and means that their progeny does not resemble their parents.

Although it is preferable to buy healthy blueberry seeds from a nursery, if you want to try your hand at it, here is how to prepare blueberry seeds for planting.

The blueberry fruit must be macerated before the seeds may be planted. You may either mash this in a bowl or process it in a food processor or blender. As you do this, add a little water to the berries.

Once the fruit is mashed, remove the floating pulp. The bottom will be reached by seeds. If you want to entirely remove the pulp, you might need to add water more than once.

The blueberry bush seeds need to be sacrificed after being collected. Put them in some moist paper towels and freeze them for 90 days. The seeds’ rest period will be broken by cold stratification, making them suitable for planting.

The seeds can either be utilized right away or stored in the freezer until you’re ready to plant them after the 90-day period has passed. In warm climates, blueberry seed planting should start in the fall; in more northern climates, it should start in the spring.

In seed trays, sow the seed in moistened sphagnum peat moss before covering it with 14 inches (6 mm) of soil. Maintain regular moisture in the medium.

Be patient; blueberry seed germination can take six to eight weeks or even three months in certain cases. Compared to their wild low-bush counterparts, the hybrid high-bush seeds germinate less consistently.

Keep the seeds in a 60 to 70-degree Fahrenheit warm, sunny environment (15-21 C). Place a fluorescent light around 14 inches (36 cm) above the seedlings if there isn’t enough sunshine.

The seedling that emerges from the developing blueberry seeds will resemble grass and have a few little leaves on top.

The seedlings of blueberry plants should not grow any taller than 5 or 6 inches (13–15 cm) during their first growing season. Move the blueberry bush seedlings into pots and place them in a sunny, warm location. Keep the soil moist.

After two to three weeks in their pots, the developing blueberry seedlings can be treated with a liquid fertilizer. When the plant reaches a height of 1 to 2 feet (31-61 cm), the resulting blueberry bush seedlings will begin to bear fruit in the second year.

When growing blueberries from seed, it may take several years before the plant starts to provide any appreciable fruit.

Be patient, and once the plant has been established, it will continue to provide you with this superfood for many years to come.
