Tips To Grow Honeydew For Your Garden

Honeydew melons, like their more well-known cousin the cantaloupe, belong to the cucurbit or gourd family, which includes cucumbers and squash. Honeydew melons are one of the most delicious melons available, and they’re also high in vitamin C and potassium. Because of their sweet, pale green flesh, honeydews are best eaten fresh. Pickled or boiled peels are available, while seeds can be roasted and dried or pressed for oil.

SUGGESTED NEWS:

The honeydew melon is oval to spherical in shape, with a smooth creamy yellow rind that peels away to reveal a fragrant, pale green inside. These melons range in weight from 4 to 8 pounds (2 to 3.5 kg) and are produced on vines with three to four melons per vine.

Due to its vulnerability to downy and powdery mildew, as well as its attractiveness to a variety of insects, honeydew has been difficult to grow in the past for both amateur gardeners and commercial growers. Most fungal diseases are now resistant to varieties like ‘Floridew,’ ‘Morgan,’ ‘Earlidew,’ and ‘Tamdew.’

Once you’ve picked the seeds or seedlings for the type of honeydew melon you wish to grow, the question of “how to develop a honeydew melon?” remains.Honeydews can be cultivated in the garden or in a large pot.

Fill peat moss pots with potting soil or compost, then plant one seed approximately 12 inch (1.5 cm) into the soil in each. Set the pots on a shallow plastic tray if starting from seed. To germinate, fill the tray halfway with water mixed with soluble fertilizer and place it in a room with a temperature of 70-90 F (21-23 C).

If required, keep adding water. Although the seeds will germinate in two weeks, you should keep the plant inside until it develops at least two leaves. Plant honeydew in the garden after the soil temperature reaches 65 degrees Fahrenheit (18 degrees Celsius) and water thoroughly. To keep weeds at bay, mulch around the transplant.

If easy removal from the vine isn’t an indicator, how do you know when honeydew is mature enough to harvest honeydew melons? Honeydew melons can be harvested three months after they are planted, depending on their size, skin color (completely white or yellow), and smoothness.

Even if the fruit is mature, it will be stiff and unripe. So, how can you know when a honeydew melon is ready to eat?

Honeydews can be matured for a few days at room temperature. To produce ethylene and speed up the ripening process, place tomatoes or apples on the counter or in a plastic bag.

If the melon is fully ripe, it can be stored in the refrigerator for up to a week, but once sliced, it should be consumed within a few days. Cut melon absorbs aromas from the refrigerator.
