Unique Idea Of Growing Vegetables On The Roof

The house in which they live has a Thai roof design on the 4th floor, Linh and her husband take advantage of that space to make a small garden to grow vegetables, providing a source of clean food for the family during the epidemic season.

A month ago, Ms. Nguyen Thi Linh (34 years old, a high school teacher, now living in Thai Binh province) and her husband started planting the first vegetable crop on the roof.

The house has a roof on the 4th floor, but during the epidemic season, they have to limit going out, so the couple wants to use that space to grow vegetables and take the initiative in daily food sources.

The idea of growing vegetables on the roof was conceived by Linh’s husband. He originally loved tinkering with crops and had experience in increasing production while serving in the military.

“In the past, my family used to grow vegetables a lot. My husband was an army officer and loved gardening, so he trained the army and helped the unit increase production, grow vegetables, raise pigs, raise fish…

When he moved back to work near his home, it was a stressful time, so he decided to make a vegetable garden on the terrace for convenience and so that his wife would not have to go to the market to contact many people,” Linh shared.

On the roof, the young couple embarked on designing pipe trusses, and recycling plastic cans to grow both hydroponic and hydroponic vegetables. Compared with traditional methods, this method has the advantage of saving space and optimizing space.

Homeowners install an automatic irrigation system with a timer, so they can comfortably go to work or be away for a week without worrying about watering the vegetables.

However, this method also has the disadvantage that the initial installation cost is a bit expensive, including money for pipes, welding installation, and design.

Due to her experience and knowledge, Linh’s husband is 100% self-sufficient, from ideation, and design drawing to construction, installation, and planting, thereby saving costs.

To grow vegetables on the roof, homeowners must first plant their own seeds outside. The seeds are placed in the vegetable rack when they grow to a certain stage. Regarding the substrate, the water from the tank is timed to pump up and then back to the tank, forming a closed loop.

In addition to the Thai roof, the surrounding terrace space is also used by the owner to grow vegetables. Currently, in the garden there are many different varieties of vegetables such as collard greens, mustard greens, cucumbers, kale, onions, basil, lemon basil, and spinach.

In the near future, the young teacher will grow some other vegetables to enrich the garden and provide a variety of clean food sources for the whole family. In addition to gardening according to the soil farming method, she and her husband also arranged and completed new pipes to grow hydroponic vegetables.

In addition, they also installed a support frame so that the vegetable rack does not touch the roof, avoiding affecting the quality of the tile roof.

Every day, brothers and sisters spend some time in the garden to take care of vegetables, while looking at the green trees, and at the same time clearing the spirit and regaining energy in the middle of the epidemic season.
